Are you really ready to go through divorce?

When your husband approached you and told you that he wanted to get a divorce, you were surprised by his sudden revelation. Recently, you knew that you were having trouble communicating. Your relationship didn't feel normal or like it once had. However, a divorce was never on your mind.

Before you agree, it's worth asking yourself if a divorce is really the right answer. If your spouse is adamant that a divorce is what they want, you won't be able to stop them from filing. However, you can ask them to go through marital counseling and to have an honest conversation before you agree to divorce.

Why is it important to talk about marriage counseling before divorce?

If you and your spouse have not gone through counseling, there may be many questions that you're struggling with. You may wonder why your spouse is no longer romantically interested in you. You might wonder why they aren't coming home at night or why they are suddenly staying longer at the office. You might believe that they are cheating on you or doing their best to avoid you, but you will never have a real answer until you sit down and talk about it.

Marriage counseling doesn't always result in people getting back together. It does, however, help you understand how the marriage has broken down, if you can make changes to stay together and if your marriage is worth fighting for. You may find through discussion that you also agree that a divorce is the right answer for any number of reasons.

Of course, there are also cases where marriage counseling has helped resolve conflicts in marriages and eliminated the need for divorces altogether.

What happens if you decide to divorce?

When you meet with your attorney, it is a good idea to have your financial documents, a list of your assets and any other information that can help you divide your property and work through other aspects of your divorce.

Divorces are expensive, complex and time-consuming. It is worth taking the time to discuss if a divorce is really the right choice for you. If it is, your attorney will be able to help you file and work through all the stages of your divorce, so that you have the knowledge and support needed to resolve this issue in your life.
