Frances Bean Cobain loses dad’s guitar in divorce process

On Behalf of | May 24, 2018 | Divorce

When a couple in Virginia marries, they likely do so believing that they will spend the rest of their lives together. However, as years pass, people change in ways that make them no longer compatible. Though both parties may recognize that ending the marriage is in the best interest of those involved, the divorce process can often seem overwhelming when someone tries to manage it without professional help. Unfortunately, the events surrounding the divorce of Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of deceased musician Kurt Cobain, illustrates these complications and could serve as a cautionary tale to others.

Frances, now 25,  married her now ex-husband in 2014. The couple filed for divorce a couple of years later. While the news of their divorce proceedings would likely garner media attention regardless, the fact that the pair were battling over her father’s guitar made the event especially newsworthy. Kurt played the instrument when he appeared on television just months before he committed suicide.

Frances’ ex-husband, Isaiah Silva, claims that she gave him the guitar as a gift. She denies these claims and requested that the guitar stay in the family. Some reports indicate that the guitar is worth millions of dollars. Despite her request, Silva will retain the guitar as part of the divorce proceedings. She has filed papers asking that premarital assets — including her inheritance from her father — be considered separate property.

While the divorce process can be complicated for those facing the end of their marriage in Virginia, there are professionals who can walk people through it. With such guidance, a person who recognizes that their marriage is no longer working can seek a happier ending, knowing of their options while protecting their interest. Though the process can be emotionally draining, most people maintain that it was necessary to ensure their future happiness.
