Woman arrested for drunk driving after fatal Virginia crash

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2018 | DUI

In the aftermath of a car accident, people may behave in unexpected ways. A trauma can often cause confusion, for example. Those who are injured in a crash may become disoriented and fail to fully understand what is happening to them. Unfortunately, police say that a young woman in Virginia has recently been arrested for drunk driving after she allegedly fled the scene of a crash.

The incident happened just before 1:30 a.m. on a day in early June. According to reports, a 59-year-old man was returning home from work, driving south on a Virginia interstate. However, police say that when he rounded a curved he struck a vehicle head-on. Reports claims that the driver of the second vehicle was headed north in the southbound lanes.

Though witnesses tried to help the man, he was reportedly pronounced dead soon after the crash. Police say that the driver of the second vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, fled the scene on foot. Police reportedly discovered her identification in the car and say they were ultimately able to track her down; she was discovered at a hospital. It is unclear what injuries — if any — she suffered. However, police say she was combative and refused a field sobriety test; therefore, officers say they requested a warrant to draw blood.

In addition to being arrested for drunk driving, the woman faces multiple other charges as a result of the Virginia crash, including failure to stop at an accident and refusing a blood or breath test. Unfortunately, the charges against the young woman are serious. A conviction will likely carry consequences that are equally serious. To ensure that she is capable of making fully informed decisions about her case, she may choose to hire an experienced criminal defense attorney who can guide her through the process.
