Digital visitation has benefits for long-distance families

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2018 | Child Custody

Digital visitation is a gift of these modern times because it makes it much easier for parents to remain close to their children who live far away. It also helps those who frequently travel to spend time with their children despite being thousands of miles apart in different states or even countries.

Digital visitation is recognized as one way to supplement visitation times in child custody cases. It is not intended to replace visitation in person, but it can help bridge the gap between visits when parents and children cannot see each other often.

Why use digital visitation?

There are many electronic forms of visitation that help you connect to your child from afar. Talking on the phone, emailing and even playing online games together can keep you connected. Video calls give you a chance to see your children and check on their well-being. It’s a cheap and effective way to spend more time together.

On a video call, you have the chance to watch your children’s facial expressions, which helps you better understand their emotions. It’s easy to miss subtle nuances in phone calls, so this adds some clarity. There’s nothing quite like being able to watch your child’s recital while 4,000 miles away or getting to show your child where you’re working in a distant country.

Digital visitation doesn’t replace in-person visits

Digital visitation is supplementary — you still need to spend time with your child in person. However, thanks to the ability to see and speak with your child, the distance between you can be lessened, even when it’s not possible to see each other in person.
